Towns

The Anchorage municipality is made of a few different towns, all accessible through Anchorage’s Ted Steven’s International Airport.

Girdwood, Anchorage, and Eagle River.

Girdwood ~ is a small Alaskan mountain town that sits amongst lush forest and is surrounded by the peaks of the Chugach Mountain Range. It is conveniently situated only 36 miles (61km) south of Anchorage, Alaska’s largest metropolis with an international airport.

Girdwood is most definitely the place to escape your day-to-day grind and experience the best of Alaska.

Girdwood also boasts the Alyeska Resort. Alyeska Resort is Alaska’s premier year-round destination featuring the 300-room Hotel Alyeska. Located just 40 miles from Anchorage. Alyeska Resort is your base camp for an endless number of summer and winter adventures.

Anchorage ~ Anchorage is the gateway to Alaska adventure. Located within Denaʼina Ełnena, on the traditional homelands of the Dena’ina Athabascan people and the Native Village of Eklutna, the city combines wild Alaska beauty, convenient urban comforts, mesmerizing outdoor spaces, and captivating arts and culture. Find sparkling glaciers, abundant wildlife, vast parks and trails, and dazzling northern lights. A trip to Anchorage opens doors to the best of Alaska, all in one place.

Eagle River ~ Eagle River is a community within the Municipality of Anchorage situated on the Eagle River, for which it is named, between Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and Chugach State Park in the Chugach Mountains. Eagle River is approximately an hour away from the Alaska’s most populous city. Many activities and attractions that you’ll come across at Eagle River focus on nature, wildlife, and the outdoors.

The Eagle River Nature Center is a great place to hike around and start trying to grasp the vastness and beauty of the area. Check it out here!

Tripadvisor has a list of local restaurants that you can see here. Some of my favorites are Lexi’s Cafe, Jitters, Matanuska Ale House and Odd Man Rush Brewery. Great ways to start your busy day and great places to relax at the end!
